Bellarmine Varsity Football

In my second year covering Varsity football under the lights has been an exciting experience! Seeing these boys grow up through a very difficult season because of injuries, losses and triumph is what makes football something special. As a former football player, I know the feeling when you are tired but know the game is almost over and have to leave it all on the field. You never know if it could be your last play because of an injury so it’s important to play every down as it could be.

As I have got to know many of the players, I do my best while around them to remind them and see it week after week as they faced injuries during the season. When I see them out of uniform one week and then suited up to play the following I can see the enthusiasm in their faces. Capturing all these moments, emotions and ups/downs is what makes sports so interesting to shoot. These boys will only be 16,17 and 18 and then real life kicks in which I do my best to remind them to live in the moment while on the field.

During covid I could see these boys were special and after a rough patch of the season with several losses in a row occurred I knew they were better then their record proved. Losing games by few points, allowing teams to come back because of injuries and just some bad breaks during big games didn’t add up. But the coaches never quit and continued to demand greatness and there was no quit in these boys either!

Finally, they found a way in the play offs and were able to win this CCS final against St. Ignatius of San Francisco 21-14. It was their second time beating them of the year as they played them during a WCAL Conference game. This time Bellarmine was healthy and this time S.I had a new quarterback. The defense was too tough and Bellarmine’s star players shined to bright to bring them to victory. Now it’s time to move on to a regional title and then the winner will play for a State Title!

Adversity is when you find out what you are made of but victory is what makes all the sacrifices worth it! These boys play to win and I was extremely proud to have been part of this journey with them.
